— About this trip

Gorges du Verdon
& Haute-Provence

The Gorges du Verdon is often described as the Grand Canyon of Europe, and while that comparison undersells its own character, the scale is genuinely impressive. The Verdon river has carved a canyon up to 700 metres deep through white limestone over millions of years, and the drive along its rim – with the turquoise water visible far below – is one of the most dramatic roads in France.

At the western end of the gorge, the Lac de Sainte-Croix is an artificial lake created in the 1970s whose colour – a vivid turquoise caused by glacial silt – makes it look more Caribbean than Provençal. Paddle boats and electric boats can be hired at the lake entrance to explore the first section of the canyon from the water. No advance booking is required in low season, though in July and August the hire points can be busy.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is one of the officially designated "most beautiful villages of France" – a small, ancient village wedged between two limestone cliffs, with a star hung on a chain between them (a local legend says it was placed there by a knight returning from the Crusades). The village is famous for its hand-painted faïence pottery, and the workshops and boutiques are genuinely worth a browse.

This is the longest drive of all six routes. An early start is essential.

Hotel Pickup

Your driver meets you in the lobby at the agreed time.

Gorges du Verdon – Rim Drive

Your driver takes the Route des Crêtes along the canyon rim, with stops at viewpoints. The drive itself is the experience. Walking trails along the rim are accessible from several points.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie

Walk through the medieval village streets and browse the faïence pottery workshops and boutiques — Moustiers has been famous for its distinctive tin-glazed ceramics for centuries, and the shops line almost every street. The Faïence Museum near the town hall traces the full history of the craft. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir sits high above the village, reached via 262 stone steps.

Lac de Sainte-Croix

Access the lake shore and take in the striking turquoise colour — the water gets its colour from glacial silt carried by the Verdon river. Swim in shallow water close to the shore or have a coffee in the café at the lake entrance.

Hotel Drop-off

Your driver returns you to your hotel at the end of the day.
